Can someone give me an honest answer please? Me and my friend are spending three months in oz and nz from november. How much will we need realistically. I dont mean just to survive but so we can go out occasionally and do and see things. Im not talking 5 star but the occasional creature comfort wouldnt go amiss.
I'm off around the same time; I've got a budget of $50AUS for Accomodation and $20AUS for Food - About £30 a day If you mix and match backpackers and guest houses and a bit of self-catering from time to time the money saved should be more then enough to treat yourselves
Hi Emma...Marcus here: most of the hostels down here cost $100 - $150 per week work provided, although Sydney and Melbourne are more expensive and rarely provide work as part of the deal. Wages in Oz are low by European standards and the hours are a little longer than we are used to: the advantages are seriously cheap fresh food all year around, lots of food from rural locations (roadside sales, local markets and etc.) and the markets in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are brilliant if you are all happy to chip and share the cooking: most of my friends say that is half the fun (LOL) Wine is obscenely cheap (4 euros gets about 5 litres) and if you search about lots of the pubs and clubs are free entry or only about $5 aus to get in: many of the hostels have free passes for backpackers, so it's NOT impossible to get out and about: country pubs and clubs are mostly free, especially if it is a "work town" ie: lots of travellers, pickers, seasonal workers etc.
Please feel free to write if you would like some help: like Steve, hope to bump into you sometime
