hiya!
I'm from London and am going to do the work & travel Australia thing for a year, planning to leave in about six months. Coz my budget is be a bit tight, i was just wondering how difficult it is to get a job there. Is there a lot of work for backpackers like myself, and how do you go about finding a job? Is it easier to find work in the bigger australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and alike? Or is there more opportunity in the rural areas for farm-work and stuff. If anyone could shed a bit of ligt on these matters for me, I'd appreciate it a lot! :)

Thanx! xxx

Is it possible to get a temporary work visa for over 30's??? The standard working holiday visa has 30yr capped aged limit.

Hi Julie! (different one or the same one as the first post? *confused* )

Yes, there are possibilities to get a temporary working visa for people over 30, but it's definitely a lot more hassle to obtain it compared to the regular one. I'm not familiar with the regulations in this area though. All the possibilities and procedures should be available at the website of the Australian department of immigration. the address is http://www.immi.gov.au/

When you get to Australia, check out http://www.daywork.com.au, I found a couple of jobs on it when I was there.

Good luck with your visas and have fun on your trip

hi there, Marcus here in Australia....just make sure you apply for a tax file number as soon as you arrive (or even from the Consulate in Edinburgh, London etc.) ... they are really strict at the moment, and my friend Ruth from Dublin was deported for working one day without a visa. Julie: don't worry about the age thing: rural employers actually prefer the older ones!!! (forgive me: I am over thirty as well, and work in a vineyard!!!)

Sydney and Melbourne have many job opportunities, but, as everywhere, are looking more and more like big cities anywhere in the world: make sure you have a readily accessible resume or curriculum vitae for even the stupidest jobs: you'll need it.

Don't be afraid to look for rural work: it's seasonal, and the wages are well below European levels; the advantages are seriously cheap fresh food, cheap wine, meeting the locals (who are really friendly) and seeing stars in the sky you didn't even realise existed!!!!

Please feel free to write if you need help: BOTH Julies and everyone else

yours Marcus

From my experience on a working holidaymaker visa in Australia, it is far easier to find a job in Sydney in the autumn/winter (April-September). Around Christmas is tough due to the amount of people there, and some work places shut down for a couple of weeks over the summer/Christmas break.

Working Holiday Visa is nearly impossible to get over thirty, however there are other optons; there is the sponsorship visa and the skilled migrant visa. Check Visa First.

Fruit picking has certainly become to be a better option for UK people, because of recent changes to the working holidaymaker visa if you do at least 3 months fruit picking (and can prove it), you can then apply for a 2nd working holidaymaker visa. This can be done from within Australia, as well as outside - so British people can now stay for up to 2 years with a working holidaymaker visa! There is a specific form for the 2nd visa - it's not the same as the first visa application form.

Fruit picking is hard, hot work - from what I heard from some people who did it, it can be more difficult to save up a decent amount of money than you first think. But for the potential now of staying 2 years its not so bad!

Word of advice for anyone coming to OZ on a WHV and hoping for bar/waitressing work try and get as much experience as possible before you leave for your CV (resume) as well as a few references to bring with you. I found it difficult to get work around where im staying - Manly/Northern Beaches area as theres alot of competiton for jobs around this time and unless you've got loads of experience in say bar/waitressing work they won't want to waste time in training someone who will leave in 3months,the best bet is to go directly into places rather than send off CV's or reply to job, and once i got my RSA certf it was alot easier,

As of June 05 to work anywhere in NSW (& QLD i think) that serves alcohol (even if you're waitressing) you need to hold an RSA (responsible serving of alcohol) certf, they are done in a day and super easy to do (there are loads of courses all around just look in the local papers when you get here) but they do cost around $65-90 so make sure you budget for that.
Hope that helps abit for anyone planning on working here

Hello!
I have some odd questions, not quite related to 'finding a job'..but this start will suffice.

This is my plan:
1. get a travel Visa for 3months.
2. get the required money and return plane ticket arranged.
3. find a job on a sheep-station <or whathaveyou>
4. disappear for 12 months
5. return to the airport/city to head back to Canada <with an expired Visa>

What happens? They arrest me? Fine me for an expired Visa? Export me? What say everyone? I'm SO curious to know. Will the trouble be worth the hassle when I try to head home? Will I be banned from Australia for life? WHATS SAY...?

Lemme know.. IM so ready to do this!!

Cheers from Canada!!

Hi dualsportbandit,

So if I understand your question correctly, you want to work without a work visa in Australia?

I don't think the issue is the authorities at the airport, but you'll have a very hard time actually finding a job in Oz. Aussie employers only want legal employees. Also, there isn't any shortage of work-seeking backpackers, so why would employers risk a big fine by hiring you instead of a traveller with a work permit?

I also don't really see the point of trying to work illegally, as a work visa can be obtained fairly easily...

JaMeZ;
Gotchya.
Well, firstly, I thought that if I just went as a 'tourist' and then arranged a job on a 'sheep-station' previous to leaving <and I've talked to many> that I could disappear for a year.

If a work visa is that easy aquire <I'm 33 now>...for sure, I'll do it!
But, otherwise, if I bury myself with a little farm somewhere and make some money doing it...<and they don't mind> .. why not?

Cheers,
Let meknow!
R.
