Hi there,

I'd like to travel across Australia (north-south, east-west in about 2,5-3 months) and I have some questions:

- Travelling across Australia by Greyhound buses is cheaper than by plane?
- what's a "YHA/HI Card"
- hitchhiking in australia? what do you think about?
- Hostels, motel, camp sites, etc.... what's cheaper?
- is it possible to get an under table work to get some money?
- do EU citzens need a visa?

Thanks

hey! i'm going travelling in 2 weeks, i'm stating off in thai then going to singapore through malaysia. i will be in oz for 7months from nov to may next year. if you plan to work you will need a working holiday visa. the hostels are definately cheaper than motels and that but i don't think anything will beat camping!!! when exactly you going?

alex :
Travelling across Australia by Greyhound buses is cheaper than by plane?

Check it out:
Greyhound Buses
Firefly Buses
(probably some other, smaller coach companies too)

Virgin Blue
Qantas
JetStar

alex :
what's a "YHA/HI Card"

YHA = Youth Hostel Association
HI = Hostelling International
The card is membership of this association, and allows you to stay at HI hostels cheaper than non-members.

This is the website for HI in Switzerland

Up to you, but be aware of the security issues involved in this. There have been scare stories, yet other people have hitched safely. Can't remember the legalities of it for Australia right now.

I personally don't recommend hitching.

alex :
is it possible to get an under table work to get some money?

If you're referring to working without an appropriate visa, then Australia has tightened up on this - the person gets in trouble, the employer gets in trouble (big fines). I have heard of people working on building sites illegally - but I do not recommend anyone to work illegally in any country.

alex :
do EU citzens need a visa?

Are you an EU citizen or Swiss? Either way, it doesn't make much difference - as a tourist you would require an ETA which is a paper-less authority to enter Australia for up to 3 months at a time, and lasts for 12 months. You can get it directly from DIMA at this website, last I knew it was AU$20 from there.

Your standard Marlboro is about 10-11 AUD, cheaper local ciggies (e.g. Horizon or Holiday) will set you back 7.50 - 8 AUD. Prices differ per store and region as well though!
