i have heard of people doing it. can't remember the official line about it though.
it might be possible for you to stay 2 years anyway (by applying for 2nd visa in or out of oz), if you do at least 3 months fruit picking on your first visa. Details of that here

I just browsed for a bit on the Immigration website of the Australian Government, and came across this bit:
4. Do I need a return ticket?
You are required to possess a return ticket, or sufficient funds for a return fare. You are also required to possess sufficient funds for the initial stages of your holiday.
Please be aware that you may be asked to provide evidence of your return airfare and funds on arrival in Australia. Evidence of funds can take the form of bank statements or savings books.
See http://www.immi.gov.au/faq/visiting/visiting03.htm#x4
So you don't need a return ticket, but you do need to have enough money for a return ticket. But it might be a good idea to look into a return ticket anyway, as many companies offer flexible open year-tickets which are a lot cheaper than two one-way tickets.

hi james,
thanks for the info! wonder if you can help cos im still undecided about whether to get a rtw ticket or fly out on a one way to oz. originally i was going to do a rtw with quite a few stops but then realised it might be a bit too expensive! now im thinking of oz with a stopover in hong kong, work in oz for the year and then flying back via nz, fiji etc. thought it might work out bit cheaper but do you know how long a stopover can be? cos i was thinking of topping up the funds in hong kong on the way!!

Maria,
I really wouldn't be able to tell you what would turn out cheaper for your plans. I reckon the best way to find out would be to step into a travel agency (such as STA) and discuss your options with one of the employees...

Hello Maria,
I didn't know whether to go on a RTW ticket or one way, I plan to go in April and also thought if I go to there first will probably meet some more people to stop off at other places along the way, and if not i'd me more confident about being on my own. Did you find out which was cheaper? I know if you get a rtw ticket you can book your first couple of flights then add the others nearer the date, think it may be cheaper this way, but if you found out different let me know.
Thanks
Tilly

hi there,
I think I'm going to go for a RTW ticket. A one way is definitely cheaper but for a bit more you get to see more of the world. Besides I feel better knowing that I don't have to save money for a return ticket while I'm out there! I'm also planning to go in March/April as I have just got my WHV. Let me know of your plans.
