Hi Amanda. Im backpacking to Thialand in September! When are your going? As far as Thailand is concerned I found a backpackers guide to Bankok. Its a little light on info but has good maps of the the differant provinces with good info of what to do and see. I thing it may be a good starting point for you.
Good Luck
Cheers,
Eric

If you're blonde I reccomend you color your hair for your trip. I've already heard horror stories about men trying to kidnap foreign women in thailand and travelling alone, especially at night might be tricky.

Hello Missy
Ah I have just returned from touring South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The land of smiles is amazing and ill will definatley be returning after Uni to hopefully reside in Krabi .
Like all countries , people can pick out the negatives all day long, of course being females there is an air of concern. My friend and I started in BKK in March. A bustling city which possessed such underlying beauty ( The Grand Palace and Wat Po are a must - as well as the chatachung market). Just keep your wits about you , stride with an air of confidence, avoid giving street vendors eye contact and the common used thai phrase ' Mai Pen Rai' ( meaning ' It doesn't matter / no worries) is often used. Head to the Banglumphu district which is where many backpackers reside and head to Thanon Khoa San , a nomads institution if there ever was one. This bustling strip is a plethora of stalls , smells , bars with nuggets of beauty to be found down the side streets and alleys - These being the hostels ( more like 5* hotels!). I reccommend Sawasdee Banglumphu Inn and the D&D Inn to stay , at night this strip is quite safe , again just have your wits about you , cover yourself appropriately , dont show off your money ( All common sense anyway).
It is fab having a companion with you to look after bags if you need to go to the loo ect and 2 heads are sometimes better than one in some situations , but if you plan to still go on your own, embrace it and just use your common sense ( Invest in a pair of hat pins, like I did if you want some protection, heh). Honestly though chick you'll have an amazing time , check the FCO ( Foreign Commonwealth Office) website , gives some handy pre-travel tips and gives you an update of happenings in Thailand. Just smile and remember to say Kapun-Kaaaa ( Thank you).
If you have any more queries just give me a mail ... I could talk about travelling all day long! heh.

Amanda/Eric, i'm going to be in Thailand from the 23rd Sept till around the 4th Oct when I head to Malaysia. I'm out on a 2 1/2 week backpack. The best information you can find/have is the lonelyplanet guide to Thailand. its got everything from where to go what to see where to eat stay and entertainments etc...really is a complete guide. i went to Egypt 3 years ago alone and i took this book with me...to be honest I dunno what I would have done without it! so I'm taking them to Thai and Malaysia.
My email is on my profile. Let me know if either want to chat, maybe meet up out there. Im looking to spend a 2-3 days each in Bangkok, Chiang Mai then down to Koh Samui, Phangnan and Krabi then across the border by train to KL and Penang for a couple of days each before heading back to England.
Hope to hear from you both soon

Hi Amanda,
I'm Andy and i live in singapore at the moment. My suggestion is that u better stay in Bangkok city itself as it is more safer than some of the islands there. My girlfriend went to Thailand alone and she has no problems at all. There are lots of things to do in Thailand but i think 5 days will be enough for u to stay there. Any doubt do email me at andyman_5324@yahoo.com.sg.
