Rinni, welcome to the forum!
Italy = Culture! Prepare yourself for a sensory overload if you're into history, architecture, culture and art. Rome is absolutely amazing. So much to see! So much to see! I spent about a week there a number of years ago, and when I left I still had the feeling as if I'd only seen the tip of the iceberg. Definitely go see all the main sites: the vatican, the forum romanum, the trevi fountain (absolutely amazing, especially at night time - and don't forget to toss in a coin for good luck! ;)), the colosseum, the nice little piazzas...
I found Milan a bit of a disappointment - don't expect a second Rome. It's a very modern city. The cathedral is the most important piece of culture, but when I was there it was being totally renovated... it still might be now.
I'm interested in your travel plans. Are you only visiting Italy? Or are you planning to backpack through some other European countries too?

PS For an interesting read on Rome I can recommend 'Angels & Demons' by Dan Brown - yes that bestselling book about which everyone keeps nagging until you've read it ;)

i'd actually be in the Czech Republic for abt 6 days for the int'l choir competition @ olomouc, then afterwards travel via rail to frankfurt to take a ryanair flight to italy. I'd have loved to backpack from prague to italy, but due to $$$ and time constraints i can't do tt =(
