If you like backpacking Romania is the best offer you can get.The public transportation is awaful, in the sense of crowdness and slowness.Otherwise it's cheap an din some areas run pretty well.Another problem with the buses that go city to city is that the drivers are quiet nuts. They drive very fasy, especially on tough roads or curvy roads.
I just got back from Romania and took a bunch of photos. I will publish them on my web site and post a link ASAP. If you would like more info, email me.
I might go there again next year, but it's better in spring or ven summer.Don't go in winter. They don't care about the snow on streets and it's really hard to move around.
Good luck !

Hi there,

I was just thinking quite on the same trip in summer 2007, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Budapest, Bucarest. All this with the train.

We have european train pass called "Inter rail", for two belts (and 22 days of validity) it's 475 Swiss Francs (about 380 USD) and you travel free of charge on the railways of the countries in those belts. You have just to pay reservations on the train if nedded.

Good luck
