I am travelling through Western Europe in June & July and while I have an idea where I want to travel to, I would like to keep it open so I may change direction on a whim if I choose. I am worried about not finding a bed in a lot of cities if I dont make reservations in advance, especially with it being high-season.
Can anyone offer some advice on this? Should I just risk it and go on a whim, or play it safe and figure out everything in advance? Never done this before...
Hey brave5,
I'm planning to do almost the same thing as you except I'll be traveling a little of Eastern Europe at the same time. I have a general outline of where and when I want to go but nothing written in stone. I have made/am going to make reservations for the first week since this will be my first time traveling outside Canada and don't know exactly what to expect or to do. Besides that, I will be winging it pretty much all the way through. I might make reservations a few days in advance as I move along on my trip.
This is probably not the kind of answer you were looking for but just letting you know that you won't be the only one thats unprepared. I am however bringing a tent that i can raise in a ditch or something in case of last minute problems .
Oh, and just a heads up. If you are planning on visiting Switzerland or Austria during the month of June, I recommend you don't wing it because of the EURO tournament. Every major city(and surrounding cities) will probably be booked solid depending on where the games are being played.
Forgot to mention that I will be traveling with a friend who has done a few one weekers (he's studying in France for the year) and he has friends who have done this before and that's what he suggested we end up doing. So this is was not a completely clueless answer on my part.
