As I commented under "Budget Travel", I am planning on approx. $25 a/day. I had hoped for more but as I expect to begone a while, this is the only way I can afford to go for as long as I'd like and see as much as possible. I am starting with Mexico, leaving from San Diego, Ca. (Where I am taking my TEFL course so I can teach abroad), into Mexico, south to Cabo San Lucas-Ferry to Mazatlan, south to Puerto Vallerta. East NE to Mexico City and continue to Oaxaca and Vera Cruz. NE to Merida east to Cancun and South into Belize. I will stop at Chichen Itza and Tulum on the way, along with other sites of note. Belize-Belmopan to Belize City and into Guatemala. Thru Guatemala to Guatemala City and SW into El Salvador. South thru Central America, I hike it to Panama City. I fly to Bogata, Columbia, thus flying over the Darien Gap. East to Caracas, Venuzuela and south into Brazil. West to Ecuador-Quito. Hike around Ecuador and then into Peru. Puru to Chile to Bolivia to Argentina to Chile. Fly from Santiago, Chile to Auckland, New Zealand. Hike NZ and north to OZ. Sydney to Perth along the south. Family in Perth. Perth to Darwin. Onward to Bangkok, Thailand. To Vietnam and Cambodia and then NE to Japan to China. China to Nepal to India. India fly to Cairo-Thru Egypt and into Sudan. Go NE to Libya(depending on status w/Libya at time) or back to Cairo and go to Athens. Eurail pass planned for ahead of time take me by train. Packing thru into Germany then to Poland and Hungary and Eastern Europe head W back into W. & S. Europe-Italy, Spain(Morocco-side trip), France, Belgium, Denmark-Back to France to England to Scotland to Ireland(Stay with Family) Then fly to Toronto and hike across Canada to British Columbia-Yukon and Alaska. South to BC again, and Washington to Oregon and back to Nevada-Home. Alot of places but I am only visiting parts of North Africa. Unlike many others, I made a general plan of my direction, though it has no time limits, so it may take three years, it may take more as I hope to get teaching in Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan. Also, I am walking and hitching for as much as possible, as it is the least expensive way to go. I've packed quite a bit in the SW parts of the U.S. and a bit in Alaska and Yukon. My pack previously was about 60lbs and less as I moved about and ate.-Pack size 6300 cu.in. My pack this time is 5400 cu.in. (working on travellite skills-okay not my specialty) and about 40 lbs. How much should one expect to have and how much have you others who've gone before me had? Note, I will have no credit cards with me. LordTurtle

LordTurtle,

Wow, you're planning a three year RTW trip? That is amazing..

I think 25 USD should be well doable. Just have a look at Kinga & Chopin, they started out with $600 and stayed on the road for 5 years! The biggest slice of travel costs will be spent on transportation (which youve already excluded from your daily expenses, right?). On this you'll be able to cut down further by not travelling around that much. I.e.: staying in one place for a few weeks and then moving on to the next place. Or simply by arranging cheap/free transport: hitchhiking!

The other big slice of the travel costs will be accommodation. On this you'll be able to cut down in several ways as well: by going camping for example. If you pitch your tent in the wild it'll be free accommodation. Camp sites are usually quite cheap as well. If you're planning on staying in cities mostly, you can either just look for cheap accommodation in hostels. Prices of these range from about 15 USD in the more developed 'western' countries to just a few bucks in cheaper countries. Also, there's the hospitality club - http://www.hospitalityclub.org - which is a great way to find free accommodation at other people's houses.

Food wise: bringing a stove and cooking your own meals will cost you no more than one or two bucks a day if you handle it right. Without a stove, food will probably be a bit more expensive, but the costs shouldn't exceed $5 daily.

And, if you run low on cash you can also find a job abroad, and thus make enough money to go travelling again for a while. I've met many people who travelled in this way: work in one place for a few months, travel a few months, work for a few months, and so on.

All in all, a daily budget of $25 seems like a really decent amount to me. There were many times that I've travelled on a way lower budget.

I'm very interested in your travel plans, man! Could you tell a bit more about your trip? What's the broad itinerary you've got in mind? What 'mode de voyage' will you be travelling?

James

JaMeZ, No, I am not. At the time I was writing this, I was only trying to cover the major directions and stops. I knew then as now that there are probably many small changes to be made by this time next year. Also, I've been fortunate to hear from about half a dozen interested people but apparently they dropped out for lack of interest or [ersonal reasons. My plan is all about broad strokes, and thus it will probably change here and there before setting out. I look forward tp seeing you either on the road JaMeZ, or at your home town. "Dont Worry, Be Happy" Best Always to All, LordTurtle... P.S. I also wanted to give any of my potential co-adventurers some idea of what they would expect to

Lucio, Hail & Well Met, I am planning on leaving between June 1, 06 and August 31, 06. I appreciate your interest and if you are in Brazil or Peru at the time, I would be honoured to meet you. I had considered going with the smaller pack of 5400 cu. in. about 80 litres, but am going with the 6300 cu. in . after all. Comforts over compactness...!!! Until then life is all work-all money goes to journeying...the great walkabout!!! LordTurtle1@aol.com

Ok, so your planning on being gone for 3 years on $25 per day. So your are planning on $27,375 for the entire 3 years. Lets just say $28,000, or roughly $9,333 per year.

You didn't happen to mention if your per day budget included or excluded travel costs (air and ground transport). If its included, I'd say its a bit unrealistic given your overall iternerary.

Although I suppose its possible, you probably want to have a reserve. Also, are you planning on supplementing your income by working here and there (even if for food and lodging). Just realize, you won't be able to pitch a tent just anywhere, and there are times when it will be unwise to hitch hike.

I myself and headed off to New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Greece, Italy, and So. France for a total of 10 months.

Dear HHM, I believe I said it somewhere if not above. No, My transportation costs, which are not outrageous because of my plans to hitchhike and walk a great deal, are not included in my budget. I have been working two jobs for some time to cover all my expenses and have little to fear in that area also, because its not as though I will be spending money every single day I travel. Have a great time on your trip and I appreciate your concern. I know I cant wait to go on mine. LordTurtle
