I am compiling a European Budget Travel Guide for backpackers and I might need some small but very useful collaboration from fellow travelers living in the “Old Continent” or that lived for a considerable period of time in a major European city.
The thing is: I have the places, the attractions, the addresses, the how to and other banal and usual travel brochure bla, bla, bla… but there is a thing missing and I think it will add a lot to this guide. That thing is the insider knowledge, that no matter how long I spend researching in one place, only “the locals” really know.
What I need is very simple: Imagine me, a more than broke writer, visiting you and that you have to advise me how to enjoy a full day or days in your city only spending in transports (and if it’s possible to cover the itinerary on foot, perfect!); which supermarket is the cheapest so I can buy food to cook at your place (yeah, I’m sleeping on your couch);the cheapest eating places in case I feel like treating myself with some local gastronomy (preferably under €5); and where can I go to party at night without spending my trip budget in a couple of drinks (if you know any free entry club, where nobody fusses with you because you are dancing without drinking, even better). Considering that you are reading this in a backpacking forum, I assume that you are saving in your trips as much as me, so guess you will not have problems in advising very good places.
Don’t make too much descriptions, I want to see and feel those places, I don’t want to imagine them. I only need to know where it is, how to get there and if it is really worth it.
I already have tons of information provided by the local tourist authorities like addresses and contacts (main tourist, transport, communication, health and security services), transports available and prices, what museums are free, what tours are free, etc… What I don’t know is if it is advisable to go to certain places at certain hours, if phone booths use to take my cash without making a phone call, which so called “charismatic and legendary places” are more likely to become the ultimate tourist trap, etc…
The same thing happens with hostels and camping sites. I already have addresses so only suggest some place that you know that is really exceptional and above all: cheap.
Since I am getting collaboration from many different people, all the texts will be adapted into a common style. Still, all the contributions will be credited in the book.
If interested, submit your text to apnobre@sapo.pt until 28 Feb. Thanks!
