Also, the question is a tad vague...what do you hope to accopomplish...do you want to stay in hotel/motel, hostels (note, the US has few hostels), luxury resorts, camping etc. Do you have at least a preliminary itinerary, if you are hitting the coasts, you will need more money than if you were going for the interior etc.

San Francisco and New York, for example, will cost you about 3 times as much as other places. If you're in the south or midwest, it'll cost considerably less for everything. You probably should figure in costs of about 60-80 dollars per day, so $6000 to $8000 US. I put that so high because the cost of travels is very high as well.
