Hi there everyone,

I am very new to this site but I am finding it extremely resourceful in my research and preperation for some world wide backpacking. My budget is going to be very tight but I am not going to let a lack of funds delay me any longer! That said I do have some to make, but would like to know what rough guide there may be for emergencies (in case I need to return back to the UK etc) and I was thinking of some kind of buffer-zone of money in case of unforseeable problems that might arise. If you need any specifics in advising me, I just require information that might be useful to Europe as this is the area I intend to travel firstly before probably returning home, making a bit more money and then moving further around the globe.

How much would I need to start off my travels? I intend to work as I go, but obviously I'd like to relax too and take in what I'm off to see. So that is another query I have for people, how have you found finding work as you have gone? (for those who travel this way?) What kind of jobs and for how long do they last?

I'm still in the very early stages of my planning, so I'm just after a little advice from those who are doing this at the moment, or who have travelled in this way as it is the only way I can probably go on travelling for a lengthy amount of time.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated of course.

Well, your budget really depends on where you plan to go, obviously southeast asia is cheaper than Australia etc.

Personally, as I have stated in other threads, I am not a big fan of "working as you go" but to each his own. The problem with working as you go is the work may not be readily avialable, and if you don't have a Work Visa you are technically breaking the law.

Yes, there are the stories of the people who take off with $1000 in their pocket and travel for two years, but for most people, that is neither practical nor ideal.

As for emergency funds, I suppose you should figure out the furthest place from home you intend to travel and research what an airline ticket would cost (on short notice) to get home from that location, that would be a starting point for emergency reserve to get you home.

From there, its really hard to say without knowing where you intend to travel and how comfortable you want to travel.
