hope it helps
my personal experience is travel with a camera you can afford to lose and claim back on your insurance
i found a semi good digital compact and a few memory cards were more than enough
left foot forward the other will follow its called walking |

My first posting here, but photography is my main interest and allready bcs of my occupation i travel to some part with my gear.
Have a good insurance (one which can provide you with funds for a replacement allready on the trip with documentation from police etc, i mean of experience)!
Have lots of cheap available card (and possible a picture-bank where you can upload full-res pics to at the hotel/hostel).
Have a bag that doesnt scream for thieves, most anonymous is best and dont lay around your gear, dont trust people with your gear (i've seem people beeing ripped off and got mugged myself once with a knife on my throat).
Take only what you most need, one body + one allround lens and one extra + flash, accesories. One compact camera for the "fun out at town" times, thats slim and easy to put in your pocket or inside your shirt (best).
There's a lot more to tell, hope this will help you to some part?
