Off to Africa back pack advice

Hi i am off to Africa in May for a year or so or for as long as the money lasts. Am looking to get a Low Alpine back pack roughly a 65 L. Do you think this is too big? wat size day pack would you advise? Was also wondering whether anyone would recommend low alpine or any other makes which are as good or better? thanks
