If you get a big rucksack you WILL fill it and will probably only use half of what you take. I learned that the hard way!
Take a 35 litre bag and buy cheap clothing while you are out there. Take some summer type clothes for thailand and in NZ get some wollies you dont mind binning before you head home.

I also learned the hard way, I went RTW for 10 months, with a fairly lightweight dedicated backpack. It worked ok, but I would have preferred a convertible backpack. Carrying around the pack (even as lightweight as it was) in the heat of south east asia sucked, I would have much preferred to just wheel it behind me. Unless your going to rough-it for a substantial amount of your trip (i.e. backwoods type stuff), I'd go with a convertible pack, one that is both wheeled, but can be worn as a backpack.
Eagle Creek (the crossroads or switchback lines) has a lot of what I am talking about http://www.eaglecreek.com/
They are a little pricey, but very worth it.

As for size, 35 liter is a tad small, I think you would want to push it to about 40+ liters (2440 Cubic Inches). My traveling companion (a woman) used a 2200 cubic inch (37 Liter) pack. Had she been traveling solo, it would not had been big enough. And we packed very very light.
