Does anyone have any ideas for ensuring that you backpack and its contents are safe while in transit?

I heard you can chain your luggage to rails or chairs on public transport using locks

Jemima theres certain airports who are very prone at losing peoples baggage. take for example heathrow, when ever i got a flight to kosovo from there ive been fairly lucky, but friends of mine have not been. so you can't really do much about it. but for the likes of coach journeys etc i would say make sure you take your valuable things out of your main rucksack and put in a daysack. because ive heard of a few horror stories concerning coach rides and what coach companys get upto in the luggage department at the bottom of the coach.

Your Luggage is at your own risk. It is your own responsibility to take good care of your belongings. Do not carry excess luggage with you for further stress and worries. If accidentally your luggage is missing or theft nobody is going to recover it. You have to take an extra care of your luggage while traveling. Put some identification of your luggage to be recognized as your belonging
