Hi, I always travel around with my 4kg (heavy) tent. And I used to put him on top of my backpack. Now, I wanna buy a new pack and I wonder if it's an option to buy it larger so my tent fits in it. But I wonder if there will be any space left in the pack for the other goods. ?
I'm only 1.60m tall, so I can't carry a pack from 80 liters I think.
How do you guys and girls travel around?
By the way... I like it heavy

Hey caveman, welcome to the forum!
I'd say: put it on top. If you buy a large backpack you'll probably have to stuff the backpack either on the left or right side in the pack.. the weight will have you leaning to one side the whole trip... reckon it'll kill your back too. it's all about an optimal gravity point, eh ;)
And i like to travel as light as I can. My backpack is 35 litres :P

Yow, James!!
I even thought it would be better on top of the pack. It's just that one of my friends don't like the view of it, I guess. But he always uses a 1.5kg 1-person-tent. That fits easy into a 60liter pack.
There's always a point in going lightweighted but I always love my stuff. I like making big meals, don't like having cold, and wanna be prepared for... who knows what. We really like to go selfsupported. And that means you have to haul it from one place to another. But I really enjoy it, still....
Ever been in Ireland? The Dingle Way for example?
See you!!

Hail and Well Met, I am in agreement with those who carry a bigger pack and like to have a few more convieniences. I carry an expedition size pack, 6000 cu in., I guess thats about 100 litres. I am fairly large though, 6'6" tall and once I get going I dont want to stop. I'd say if you've got the room, put it inside, and if not-On Top. Best to you !!! See you on the Road!

you should go to an outdoor recreation out fitter, like Rei...the employees can tell you the best way to pack your pack...weight distribution is really important for your back pack to sit properly...I'm sure you could find something to tell you this info online too...

I've packed a tent with me since 2001, and been on the road for 27 months of that time. I always carry it inside. I don't use it constantly, so when I'm not camping, it's out of the way in my sleeping bag compartment. I also use a compression sack to save space within my pack. I take the poles out and compress the tent, then pack the poles in seperately. Compessed the tent's about the size of a soccer ball, maybe a bit smaller. It's heavy, but for me, size is more important than weight.
