Electronic gear...is an ipod the "all in one" alternative?

Mornin' all,
I have 3 pieces of indispensable electronic gear that I couldn't do without but I'm now beginning to wonder if I shouldn't be looking at an ipod as a "swiss army knife" alternative.
The 3 things are:
A robust b/w pda that I use to read ebooks. I'm a voracious reader and I can load 4 or 5 full novels onto the pda and save a lot of space over carrying that many real books.
A small 512mb mp3 player that takes aaa batteries. I get about 150 songs on to it and the batteries mean that even if it dies on a bus I can always find a free battery in the bottom of my pack.
A card reader/hard drive device that I can transfer photos on to from my memory card which gives me 32GB of storge.
My question is whether an 80GB ipod would be a better device since it can actually do all of the above in one package? Anyone travelled with one?
