I am going backpacking for a month with my boyfriend this summer through Spain along Santiago di Compostella. Usually we just make a fire to cook, but this region will probably be very hot and dry, and we worry that we would set the woods on fire!

Is it any better to have a gas stove? Can anyone recommend one to me. It seems like a pain to have to always buy fuel. What is easy, cheap, and lightweight?

Olivia,

Welcome to the forum, first of all! :)
Stoves are indeed safer than making your own fires, and a lot easier and faster to cook your meals on too. Gas stoves are pretty cheap to buy and easy to use. The downside is that the availability of the gas cans (CampinGaz) isn't always that great in other countries. I think in Spain it won't be much of a problem to find them, as there is enough tourism there. Although I don't have any personal experience with this one, I've been told that the MSR Pocket Rocket is decent, small and light (under 100 grams, excluding gas tank). Costs about 30 Euros. Here are a few links that might be of some help:

Edit: Perhaps this page might be of some use as well. It's just been updated:

Gas stoves, multi fuel stoves are fantastic!! You can take the actual stove itself anywhere with little to no trouble. In Europe, Asia, etc, you may have to find fuel though and it can be tough if you dont have a multi fuel stove. Mine is a Brunton-Nova and I swear by it. A few minutes of stove and I am nearly ready to eat. Matter of fact, I've probably cooked and eaten by the time the fire is ready to cook on. Besides, It is environmentally safer and friendlier to use a stove, when used safely, then to build a fire. If the location allows for a fire than great, but if not, You Are Prepared. Remember Multi-Fuel is the only way to go though. You can get some kind of fuel almost anywhere!!! Tough to find Coleman fuel overseas though. MSR also makes great stoves, as does Primus and Markill.
