I good friend of mine has recently asked me to do a year long trip, i agreed as i would love to go travelling again, however, i spent this weekend camping with this person and there is no way that we would be compatible for a year long trip. How do i talk to her without totally crushing her, especially when i will definately still be going away.

I feel terrible, what should i do?

Yeah, sticky situation indeed. Just tell your friend that you've decided you want to travel on your own. It would be sort of wise not to tell her the real reasons of going seperate ways, so if I were you I'd make it into some sort of story about personal exploration:

"You see, I want to, need to explore the world on my own, find myself and the higher truth that's out there, and for that I simply need to be away from everyone and everything that binds me here."

Or something alike.... Kind of a "It's not you, it's me" story. She should understand. Good luck, and let us know how everything turns out! :)

By the way, where are you planning to go?

Decisions decisions, there are so many places i want to go, it's so hard to choose. I am going to Croatia next Monday for a few weeks so i am taking my guide books so i can plan my journey, i'm going to start in Australia and spend some time there as i have never been then go to NZ. I have to force myself not to go to Thailand as i love it there.

Thanks for the advice James. She knows me really well so i will have to tread carefully but the 'personal journey' is a definate winner.
