Hello!
I will be traveling in Australia in May 2010, and I am looking for fun loving, easygoing travel buddies for any part of my trip. I plan on starting in Sydney and making my way up the coast to Cairns, possibly using the Oz Experience bus. I have about 4 weeks for the entire trip. I am from New York (USA), and this will be the second time for me in Australia, but one of my few travel-alone trips. Let me know if you will be down under in the same timeframe!

hey man. i visited oz last year... alone.. and it was in my opinion even better than going there in a group... there are so many backpackers in oz its surreal as you know... and i teamed up with so many wonderful people during my packing on the east coast... so even if you dont find anyone prior to your trip you shouldnt worry because if youre just a bit openminded and easygoing you will find so many people that are more than happy to share expenses.
I am coming to the USA in may to do some packing there( arriving in NYC), and am also visiting Oz in october or november again... you have to love the Oz easygoing lifestyle.
Where are you from?
here is my mail: andy.qlster@gmail.com
please share your experience because i did not make it to cairns last year... only as far as to the fraser island( best part of my trip along with Mojo surf trip).
take care

Hey Tom,
I am Markus, from Berlin, 24 years old and also want to travel to Australia from mid of may till mid of june. Have pretty the same plan as you - starting in melbourne and then up the east coast to cairns.
Currently i don't have exact plans - so I am open for pretty everything. So if you like we can travel a bit together.
cheers
Markus

Hi Markus,
It would be great if our paths crossed while we were in Australia. Let me give you a little more detail on my schedule: I will be in Sydney from the 7th of May until maybe the 12th (depending on how I feel), and at that point, I'll begin traveling up the coast. My flight back home is the 2nd of June, and I would like 4-5 nights in Cairns at the end of my trip (maybe that is too much?) - so that gives me just over two weeks to make the trip up. This timing is flexible, of course, so if I feel like staying in a place longer (or shorter), I can always adjust. The only dates that are truly fixed are my arrival and departure dates.
Do you think this fits with your timing?

This sounds very exciting...I've always wanted to visit Australia and backpack. I would be interested for sure for May 2010.
Tom, if you are looking for a travel buddy still, let me know.
I'm a 28yr old female, easy going, love to travel. I spent 7 yrs in New Jersey/New York and just relocated back to India in Jan 2010. I'd like to take this year off and travel and meet new people.
If you can share more details abt the trip - budget etc, that would be great!
Thanks!

Hi Jasmine,
If our timing matches up, then yea it would be great to meet up. I plan on going on my trip whether I find a travel buddy or not, but if it works out, then that's great.
As far as details go, I laid out some of the dates a few posts above. As far as budgeting goes, I'll be staying at hostels, so those cost usually between AUD$17 - AUD$35 per night. I'm figuring around AUD$40 per day for food and drink on average, maybe a little more, maybe a little less depending on how often I cook for myself (cheaper) or how many beers I have (more expensive). So for a 30 day trip that is about AUD$2,000 in room and board.
As far as transport, I was originally thinking the Oz experience bus, but upon further research, I am leaning towards getting a greyhound "mini traveller" pass, which is a hop on hop off bus pass from Sydney to Cairs, for AUD$360 or so. It's cheaper than the Oz exp and has fewer crazy drunk gap year travelers.
Anyways, I would totally be down for meeting up in Sydney or along the way, if the timing works out. Let me know what you think!
