After many years thinking about it I have eventually booked my ticket on my own and I am off round the world starting 17th February 2006 from London, yippee!!

Now all I need is a little help from anyone that can. My itinery is:

17th February - London to Cape Town then overland to Johannesburg

10th March - Johannesburg to Bangkok then overland to Singapore

31st March - Singapore to Perth then overland to Sydney (with working visa in oz)

18th August Sydney to Christchurch then overland to Auckland (with working visa in NZ)

4th January to Fiji

18th January LA then overland to New York

16th February back home to London

The dates from entering Perth onwards are approximate.

Also not sure whether to have christmas and New Year in Auckland or Fiji.

So there you have it! Any help or advice on anything; hostels, overland trips, weather etc etc would be greatly appreciated.

Also anybody who may be heading to any of the areas the same time join in and get ready for fun!!

Hi,

I looked at all the travel agencies including sta but because I want to do so many continents they were not that cheap. Instead I went direct through virgin atlantic who are the providers of the escapade ticket and it was about £200 cheaper.

My ticket was £1270 inc all taxes etc.

Saving like mad for the next 6 months and how successful I am will depend on how much money I take but I am planning on taking £2000 with me plus credit card. I am hoping not to spend this as i will be working in Australia and New Zealand and thus funding myself that way as well.

Hope this helps and if you do manage to get away hopefully see you both somewhere on route!

Lisa

working visas are easy to get you apply for them online, they are £60 each and take only a few days to come through.

Only restriction is you can only apply up to a year before you enter the country and you have to be aged 18-30 (up to your 31st birthday). You then have a year in oz to work and 2 years in NZ as from 1st July.

For Australia working holidaymaker visas, from November this year you can get a 1 year extension/2nd visa - as long as you work for at least 3 months fruit picking on the first working holidaymaker visa.

I only have one bit of advice for you....
Make sure you already have your transportation figured out when crossing from perth to sydney. The Nallabour (desert stretch on route to adelaide from perth) is not the kind of place you want to be stuck! I would suggest checking out the local flights (which are getting cheaper, might cost you AUS$120 or a bit more) or checking a bus company like greyhound. The trip from adelaide to the east coast is ok though.
If you are heading through melbourne to sydney, you have to take the great ocean road. This road follows the coast from melbourne west towards adelaide (though not that far! )

Hi Lisa
Only a few days before you go! What a trip, we did a similar one barring Africa a couple of years ago and now I'm jealous!
One bit of advice, don't get to Sydney and get stuck there, too many people we met got booked into a hostel and then couldn't afford to see anymore of the country, its called the Sydney trap so be aware! Do go west from Sydney to the Blue Mountains - well worth the visit.
NZ is fantastic, its small but has loads to it, you shouldn't leave without doing the Franz Joseph Glacier an amazing experience.
If you plan to do Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon from LA, make sure you get there midweek as you can pick up a really good room rate at on eof the big casino hotels that usually a backpacker wouldn't be able to afford - at the weekend the rates go up sometimes by 200% so be aware.
Another thing you might consider is becoming a member of WWOOF - u can become a member and do volunteer work in exchange for food and accomodation - so if you can't find a job and your budget is tight it might help out. You can WWOOF in any country just go on the WWOOF website and you'll see. Safe Travels. Rach
