I'm very soon going travelling for 5 months; Asia, Australia and South America. It's my first time and wanted some advice on taking my acoustic guitar with me. Is this common for travellers or not? Has anyone done it before and how did it/is it going? Any advice very welcome, thanks.
It's certainly not uncommon to bring a guitar. Think about this though: during your travels your guitar will probably get damaged somewhat due to transportation in trains/buses etc. It might therefore be a good idea to bring a very cheap one, where it wouldn't be that big a deal if it wouldn't make it back. You can also consider buying a cheap guitar at your destination, instead of bringing it from home. This will save you hassle/money with the airlines (with regard to oversized luggage etc.) Hope this can be of some help. Have a great trip!

I've also seen people in airports being very thorough with guitar cases as well - be wise and take a cheap one - depending on what countries you go to as well - but DON't be silly/cheeky at customs and say somehitng like 'a mouth organ' or 'rifle' to the question 'what's in the guitar case' - saw a guy get frogmarched by two burly custom guys -
The case can be good for stickers etc though. Think about space on public transport - if you're on a bus/train... do you want it bashed about?
