It all kinda depends on where you want to go, if you're going to work anywhere on the way, what money you're starting with - and a whole load of other things!
About 10 years ago I met a couple in Boston (USA) who were travelling round the world, heading eastward. I asked if they had any regrets in doing the rtw trip, and they said the only one was about heading eastward, and going to the USA sometime after Australia & New Zealand, as Australia & NZ are more laid back and they had culture shock for the first week in the USA.
You probably need to plan on if you're going to work anywhere, remembering some places in the world are cheaper to be in (a lot of south east Asia), and other places cost quite a bit more (USA, Canada, Australia etc).
It might be an idea to go to the less costly places last so you don't need to worry quite so much about money (and if you head to Asia after Australia, you may well have a working holiday visa for Australia). That would suggest a westward direction for your travels.
However heading eastward may be the way to go if you don't have so much money to begin with, as places in Asia can be less costly, and you may have a working holiday visa for both Australia (which can work out to be 2 years if you apply for a 2nd (if you fruit pick for 3+ months)) and New Zealand (which can be up to 2 years as well I think), and then continue travelling after hopefully not spending too much of the earned money in those countries!
