I find one of the best ways to find out what is interesting or worth seeing is to read/research about your destination before you go (yea, it's pretty basic, but i've met a lot of travellers that don't do this).
In general, I would HIGHLY reccomend Bill Bryson. He's written about England and Australia specifically, but also much of the USA and Europe.
Who's writing or what other books do the rest of you reccomend?

I still want to read Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything". I've read a few pages and it looks terribly interesting and written in a hilarious way!
I'd also recommend books by Paul Theroux, he's done some major world traveling as well. Especially if you're into rail travel (patagonian express etc) , this guy should definitely be your first choice of literature.
And my favourite travel author of all - though his books aren't very destination specific - is without a doubt the one and only Jack Kerouac. I'm currently re-reading his world famous "On The Road" for the third time. I simply love the beat way he writes!! On my last journey I carried a pocket edition of "Lonesome Traveler" with me and devoured the stories within days. For my next trip I'll be bringing his "The Darma Bums" with me.
I guess it would be kinda accurate to say I'm a Kerouac junkie....

"A Short History of Nearly Everying" is really good. I bought it as soon as it came out.
Anything of his is great.
If anyone is travelling to Britain, i highly reccoment his "Notes from a Small Island". I bought it when i was travelling and i'm reading for a second time now.
