Tangier, the portal to the African continent is the city of chaos, hash and tourist scams and makes an awful first impression of Morocco. :/ You can't walk over the street for a minute without being harassed. People want to sell you gallabas (or however you spell that), carpets, but most of all drugs/hash. This can get nasty at times too. Locals will approach you very friendly, just chit-chatting. After a while they'll change the subject and try to scam you into buying their stuff for way too much money which you really don't want. Walking away, screaming at them or getting the cops is the only way to get rid of them.

My advice for this city is: skip it completely! Tangier really doesn't have that much to offer, and will not leave you with a good impression at all. Don't even spend a night there; just take the first bus or train out. The rest of the country is quite amazing though, so don't let this piece of advice withhold you from visiting.
