I travelled around the middle east in 2007, just after the Israeli conflict with Hezbollah. I was told repeatedly not to go to the West Bank. Did I listen? Did I hell!
Jerusalem is your number one destination. The best city I've been to. Just don't engage in any political debates with anyone...seriously. Doesn't matter if you know your stuff; they know it a hundred times more.
I was lucky. It snowed when I was in Jerusalem (a very rare thing). Bethlehem on Xmas Eve was amazing but kind of got involved in some fighting between Fatah and Hamas. Don't be put off by what people say though, about the west bank. The palestinians are most welcoming (obvious reasons) and the history of the area is intense. The worst part is the wall they built to annex East Jerusalem (very sad). Also head up north to Galilee. Hire a bike and cycle round it. Lovely way to spend a day. The Kibbutz parties are ok but very overrated. I hired a car and tried to cross into Lebanon from the Good Hope Crossing and before I knew it a tank and armoured personal appeared and we got escorted off. Looking back it was an idiotic thing to do but the young Israeli soldiers were ok about it.
Israel is beautiful. From the Golan Heights, Safed, Nazareth, Dead Sea, Jericho, Hebron, Dimona and Eilat. If you're down south you may as well take a taxi from the Eygptian border to Dahab, although beware - it isn't what it once was.
Anyway have a great time if you head that way. If you are doing budget haggle every price starting from a third of what they say.
You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need |
